How to Wear a Belt

How to Wear a Belt

You probably have a large collection of belts stowed away in your closet. But you may be unsure just how to pair them with your current clothes. With a little creativity, you can use your belts to update a variety of clothing styles and shapes and make your outfit seem very "now."

Things You'll Need:

Patent leather belt

Snakeskin belt

Thin belt

Thick belt

Waisted pants

Low-rise jeans

Wool coat

Long blazer

Step
1

Look for belts in a range of widths, from super skinny ones (a half-inch or less) to wide belts that are several inches from the bottom to the top.

Step
2

Select belts that have different finishes. Try patent leather (black and/or bright colors such as red, cobalt blue and yellow) and textured snakeskin.

Step
3

Wear a belt with waisted pants to call attention to a narrow mid-section. This works well with a fitted sweater or blouse tucked in.

Step
4

Buckle your belt over a longer tunic or sweater to create an hour-glass figure.

Step
5

Make a wool dress coat or a longer blazer look more modern by adding a thick belt at the waist. This can be a quick and easy way to get a wardrobe update.

Tips & Warnings

Buy belts in different waist sizes depending on how you plan to wear them. You'll need a smaller belt to go over thinner fabrics and for pants that fit at your natural waist. Opt for a larger belt if you plan to wear it over a sweater or with lower-rise jeans.

Tie a pretty ribbon around your waist instead of a belt. Or, get a modern effect by clasping a long vintage necklace in its place.

Avoid wearing a belt that doesn't fit. If the belt is straining to fit in the last hole, it may make your clothing bulge unnecessarily. On the other hand, a too-large belt can also add bulk, since the extra leather may not stay in place.

How to Wear a Bandana

How to Wear a Bandana

Bandanas are one of the most versatile pieces of a person's wardrobe. They come in all colors, with hundreds of designs, and have been part of men and women's wardrobes since the sixteenth century. Check below for some known and not so well known ways to wear a bandana.

1

Fold the bandana in half diagonally making a triangle. Tie two ends behind the neck. The bandana can be worn loosely around the neck, pulled up to cover the nose and mouth (bandit outlaw style), or pulled up to the top of the head and flipped toward the back of the head for a loose kerchief look.

2

Match two bandanas with the same color and design. Lay the bandanas out flat with the front sides together. Create a shirt by sewing up the sides, leaving holes for arms, and sewing the top, leaving a head hole. Turn right side out and wear the shirt.

3

Make a skull cap by folding the bandana in half diagonally into a triangle. Put the long edge of the bandana on the forehead, placing it as high or as low as desired. Smooth the body of the triangle back over the hair with the point falling by the nape of the neck. Bring the ends of the bandana to the back of the head, overlapping the triangle tip. Tie the ends into a square knot. Tug on the point of the triangle to smooth out the ripples.

4

Wear the bandana as a headband. Fold the bandana in half diagonally into a triangular shape. Starting at the pointed tip, fold the bandana over 1 inch at a time toward the long edge. Place under the hair, bringing the ends up over the top of the head and tie. An alternative would be placing the headband around the forehead and tying at the top back of the head.

Tips & Warnings

Take your cue from the array of beautiful dresses worn on the red carpet and on the runways of New York and Paris. What the celebrities wear should give you some good ideas for yourself.

Try different hairstyles to balance the lines of the gowns. Half up and half down is a flattering style on most people, but also consider a French twist or curling long hair and pulling it all back with a clip.

Emphasize your favorite facial feature with your makeup. Try smoky eyes or bold lips, for a polished evening look.

Wear jewelry and other accessories sparingly, since too many other details will actually take away some of the impact of an amazing dress.

How to Wear a Backless Dress

How to Wear a Backless Dress

A backless dress is a perfect choice when you want to show off your assets without baring it all. If you have a well-toned back and pretty skin, a backless dress can show off your sexy and alluring side, yet still be proper at the same time.

Things You'll Need:

Backless dress

Halter bra

Sandals

High heels

Jewelry

Thong underwear

Tape

Exfoliating bath scrub

Body lotion

Self tanner

Step
1

Wear a backless sundress to a garden party or out for lunch with sandals and pearls for a classic and demure look.

Step
2

Choose a backless dress with a
halter
top

reminiscent of Marilyn Monroe for a wedding or special event. Keep your accessories simple so your figure will take center stage.

Step
3

Try on backless dresses in different fabrics, cuts and weights to see what best suits you. A form-fitting style will show off a perfectly toned body, while an A-line style is often a better pick to hide flaws in the lower-half of your body and also to help balance out broader shoulders or bigger arms.

Step
4

Wear a halter bra that attaches behind your neck and also low enough on your back that it won't show at all. Try on the dress with the bra before you go out and check in a three-way mirror to be sure that your straps are under cover from all angles.

Step
5

Try taping your breasts to give them form if you can't find a bra that works with the dress. Or sew bra cups right into the top of the dress. Also go for thong underwear or invisible panties so the dress will hang well without showing any lines underneath.

Step
6

Exfoliate your back with a gentle scrub and then moisturize with a lotion that adds a luminescent glow so that
your
skin

with look and feel its best when you wear a backless dress.

Step
7

Use self-tanner to get a sun-kissed look, and also to fill in any bathing suit strap lines that could otherwise ruin the sexy effect of your backless dress.

Tips & Warnings

Make a backless dress work in cooler weather by layering it over a thin t-shirt or tank top.

Select a pretty shawl or wrap that will work with a backless dress to give you a bit more coverage without marring the look of your dress.

Be sure to check how low the dress dips in the back so you don't show more than you intended to by mistake.

How to Wash Vintage Accessories

How to Wash Vintage Accessories

Your vintage outfit wouldn't be complete without those all-important accessories. How you clean them largely depends on what material they are made from.

Things You'll Need:

Mild Detergent

Warm Water

White Vinegar

White Vinegar

leather cleaner and conditioner

hat brush

Step
1

Brush hats with a hat brush (available at most hat stores - look in the Yellow Pages under "Hats"). To remove blemishes from a felt hat, hold it over steam coming from boiling water in a teakettle and brush.

Step
2

Dry clean silk scarves or hand-wash in warm water with a mild detergent.

Step
3

Clean all leather accessories (such as purses and belts) with a leather cleaner and conditioner. Use a suede cleaner for suede, not a leather cleaner.

Step
4

Tapestry and petit point purses should be cleaned with dry suds only. Put 1/8 cup mild detergent in two cups of water and beat with a whisk or beater until suds form. Using a toothbrush or clean sponge, spread suds only onto purse. Wipe with a damp sponge.

Step
5

Fabric purses should be blotted clean with a clean cloth and cold water. Blot, do not rub.

Step
6

Hand-wash gloves in a mild detergent such as Woolite in cool water.

Step
7

To whiten vintage lace collars, put them in a solution of 2/3 cup white vinegar to two cups cool water and soak for about an hour.

Tips & Warnings

Hats and purses with feathers, sequins, rhinestones, beads and other adornments should not be cleaned with water. If they need cleaning, try brushing with a light brush or take them to an antique preservationist. (Look in the Yellow Pages under "Antiques - Restoration and Preservation".)

Be sure to test any fabric - such as that found on a purse - for color-fastness before cleaning with water.

If an accessory seems on the verge of falling apart, do not attempt to clean it at home. Take it to an antique preservationist.
